F irst Christian Church anticipates that our church will be able to be more involved in mission in our community as a result of this new Community Center.  Our plans for the Community Center are varied.  First, we will use it to continue housing volunteers who come to our city to help rebuilding post-Katrina.  Second, we will use this space to minister to our community by offering: space for civic groups to meet (Boy and Girl Scouts, counseling, support groups, A.A., etc...), classes and seminars (ESL, parenting, spirituality, care giving), space for ecumenical meetings, as well as additional space to be used for First Christian Church's classes and ministries (as we are at capacity in our current building).

Cornelius Community Center Update

As you can see, the building is rapidly nearing completion. All of the long term volunteers, their trailers and tools were gone in mid-June. By July 5, the building should be completely tiled. The week of July 5, the carpet will be installed in the classrooms. A mission group is coming the week of July 11 to finish landscaping and other odds and ends. By the end of July, the building should be finished except for the kitchen cabinets/appliances.
The date for the Center's dedication is still not set. I am trying to work with the long term volunteers, including Carl and Robin Zerweck and Josh Baird, to set a date such that they can attend. I can safely say it won't be until the very end of August at the earliest.
A full and detailed account by line item will be distributed mid-July. Our main overage in our budget has been plumbing and slab work. The city made us pave a larger parking lot than we had originally listed when we were approved for our loan. The plumbing contractor charged us over 30% more than we contracted for back in October. Josh is handling the discussion with them about that. Also, we are still in negotiation with the city about a sidewalk, its length and width. All in all, we hit our target budget number pretty close. We still have $10,000 of our loan that we have not used yet. We are holding off on that until we get the final word on the sidewalk.
We continue to be thankful for all of the volunteers who have labored on the Center. We continue to be thankful to each of you for upholding your pledges and donations. It's hard to believe how far we've come in only four months.
